I wrote the same kind of app on the Palm Pilot a few years ago, it was called Fuel and I received a lot of good feedback with it so I decided to rewrite it for the iPhone. Here it is ! FuelStats is now available on the Apple Store.
FuelStats works on iPhone or iPod Touch starting with iOS 3.0.
This application will compute mpg stats for you, and displays graphs like the cost/distance or the fuel consumption per distance. It will record your GPS info when you enter the data so you may find later the position of a specific gas station. Filling the data is very easy and FuelStats is reusing the stats in order to guess a 'good' value for most of the infos, the goal is to be able to fill the form as quick as possible. You may record several vehicle and each one will have its own fuel gauge that will compute for you what's left in your tank and how far you may go, this is a unique to FuelStats, other app do not have this particular feature and I found it very useful (even if your computer's car already has such capability). You may use this app even in foreign countries and/or with rented cars using different odometer unit (km and miles can be choosen for each vehicle). Of course, FuelStats manages as many vehicles as you want.

Unique feature, you may customize the gauge to make it as close as possible to the real one and place the marker like it is on your gauge, FuelStats will compute your autonomy based on the average mpg.
There is also a very open feature about services and repairs, it’s working like a reminder, you may define any alerts, based on mileage and/or time.
